Guide - how to make the perfect competition hair
A lot of people struggle with doing their hair for competition. We have developed a bullet proof method that ensures your hair lasts all day and looks perfect every time.
The main idea is to use a hairnet, to grab all the excess hair in. This way you can make it super tight and be sure your helmet will fit every time.
First make a low ponytail, look down whilst make it, this way it gets as low as possible. Put on the donut (see our hair donut size guide, to choose the perfect size for you). Spread the hair evenly over the donut, take a hair tie put over and take a second hair tie, this time twist it, so it becomes tight.
Then you take a hairnet and put a bobby through by the knots, and place the bobby over the hair ties. You open up the hairnet, and try to catch all the excess hair inside it (if you have really long/thick hair use two hairnets). Then you flip it around behind the bun and tighten.
When putting on your helmet make sure to pull out the bun - this way the helmet goes behind your bun and dosen't have to fit on top. An extra tip here would be to slightly pull out the hair tie, when you have made your ponytail. This way you create even more space for your helmet behind the bun.
FAQ
What should I do if my hair is very thick or long?
Our method (as shown in the video above) works perfectly for thick or long hair. It makes it super easy to create a bun that stays tight and flawless all day, thanks to the hairnet.
Sometimes, we actually use two hairnets instead of one: the first one to catch all the hair, and the second to really tighten everything in place ♡
Another key detail is the size of your hair donut. While we usually recommend a tiny donut, thicker or longer hair might need a medium or even grande size - simply because there’s too much hair to fit into a tiny one.
That said, we rarely recommend the grande donut, since it only works if your hair is both very long and thick. If you don’t have quite enough volume, the accessories won’t show as nicely, and it’ll be harder to get that tight, polished finish ♡
How can I make the bun fit comfortably under my helmet?
With this method, it’s super easy to make any helmet fit - even if you have thick hair. All the extra hair is neatly tucked into a hairnet, so you can pull the bun out slightly and let the helmet slide in behind it, instead of trying to fit over the top.
If you’re struggling, try this: once you’ve made the first (very low) ponytail, gently loosen the hair tie a bit. That gives your helmet more space to sit comfortably behind the bun.
If you ever need personal guidance, feel free to reach out to us at info@bellinoxx.dk. We often exhibit at horse shows across Europe - and if you stop by a BelliNoxx stand, we’ll be more than happy to show you exactly how to make the perfect bun for your hair.
What do I need to be able to do this at home?
Can the method work on very fine hair?
With very fine hair, a tiny donut works best. If your hair doesn’t fully cover the donut, we recommend adding a pearl hairnet for a beautiful finish ♡
When you have fine hair, the hairnet technique (shown in the video above) also adds a touch of volume, helping the accessories sit more beautifully on the bun.
